UFP Art & Design 2024 – Term 3 – Final Project for Art Practice
My basic concept follows a classic gangster movie set up, there’s a meeting between two criminals at night, one has the ‘stuff’ and the other has the money. The bulk of the project is largely inspired by films like Baby Driver (Dir. Edgar Wright), Goodfellas (Dir. Martin Scorsese) and Pulp Fiction (Dir. Quentin Tarantino).
Something I’ve learned as I’ve done more and more videography and filming, you spend far more time planning and setting up shots than you get in the final video. I’ve shot around 18 minutes of footage across 3 weeks, only about 6 minutes was actually usable, and only 1 minute and 30 seconds actually ended up in the final film. The ratio of video shot to usable footage is almost 100:1. I used a few shots from Strangers On A Train (1951), like inserts of shoes, tracking shots of running/walking as storyboards. Very matter of fact framing, aligning closely to the rule of thirds, as well as maintaining consistent motion on screen. I managed to get help with filming at the train station from a friend, allowing for more complex cinematography. I created a detailed shooting schedule and was able to gather the shots I needed in a very short amount of time.
