UFP Art & Design 2024 – Term 2 – Art Practice
Because of my inexperience with more advanced editing softwares, (i.e. Adobe, Davinci, Blender) I resorted to using iMovie for this project, this meant that more complex techniques like compositing, green screen or VFX were out of my grasp. (Almost) everything in the video is done entirely in camera. I developed a variety of shoestring budget solutions to various shots. For the window shots I used my Philips TV set, playing stock footage to get the desired image and lighting.
There is a shot at 1:36, where the astronaut stands watching their younger self signing the contract to leave earth. I played both characters in the scene, using an optical split-screen effect, I filmed the entire sequence in one take, so as to not shake or move the camera. The reentry scene was another difficult one,
I didn’t want to use footage from an existing property, I wanted to create it from scratch, so I set up a model of the SNC Dreamchaser I made on some black fabric, positioned a red light underneath it, and sprayed the model from below with deodorant. This gave the impression of the spacecraft glowing as it hit the atmosphere at supersonic speeds.
