Can’t Sleep – Short Film

UFP Art&Design – Term 1 Project

The limited time and resources forced innovation in my work. In lieu of a tripod I used blu-tack to stick my phone to various surfaces, creating a far more objective and cold cinematography. This led to this unique top-down angle, which really exaggerates the feeling of isolation in the scene.

Lots of films have top-down cinematography, but the two films that really inspired me to implement this in my work are Lost In Translation (2003) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), which both used the style in radically different ways, boosting the power and impact of their respective scenes. This specific type of shot creates a far more clinical, cold and omnipotent perspective, this works for both films, isolating the protagonists within the frame.
